San Diego Aerospace Engineering Program
During
the 2002 calendar year, the aerospace engineering program
has taken great strides into becoming a world-class engineering
degree program (fully ABET approved). The aerospace engineering
degree is offered through an interdepartmental program that
draws form the strengths of both the Mechanical and Aerospace
Engineering (MAE) and Structural Engineering (SE) combined
with the integration of engineering disciplines. Students
entering this new interdepartmental program, select either
MAE or SE as their home department based upon their particular
field of interest.
The
student enrollment in the aerospace program has grown steadily
since its inception in 1992. In the fall of 2000, 48 new freshman
and transfer students selected Aerospace Engineering as their
major, while the sophomore class had grown to 26 students.
By the spring of 2001, many of those freshmen and sophomores,
have obtained enough credits to be classified as sophomores
and juniors, respectively. For the fall term (Fall, 2001),
there are a total of 78 new (freshman and transfer) aerospace
engineering students and (Fall, 2002) there are a total of
90 new (freshman and transfer) aerospace engineering students
Thus the Aerospace program currently has over 250 students.
