University
of California, Berkeley -- Space Sciences Laboratory (UCBSSL)
The UCBSSL Center of Excellence research is focussed on the
development of instrumentation to answer fundamental scientific
questions regarding nucleosynthesis and supernova explosions.
Nucleosynthesis and gravity, in their unstable balance, drive
the evolution of astrophysical systems from compact objects
to the interstellar medium. By directly probing these fundamental
driving forces, the nuclear astrophysics instrumentation to
be developed under this program by students and researchers
at UCBSSL, will play key roles in the space missions coming
on line over the next two decades. This program encompasses
both the design of telescopes and the development of new technologies
permitting novel telescope designs. This novel instrumentation
and telescope designs program also stimulates the development
of a scientific ballooning program for instrument testing
and scientific discovery from space. CalSpace/Space Grant
Center of Excellence postdoctoral researchers and undergraduate/graduate
students play crucial roles in all aspects of the program.
UCBSSL provides an exceptional and complementary Education
and Public Outreach (E&PO) program, built around the UCBSSL
Center for Science Education. The E&PO part of the CalSpace
Center of Excellence at UCB Program supports two types of
activities: 1. NASA Space Grant Summer Fellowships; and 2.
K-12 Education and Public Outreach activities.
