University
of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)
CalSpace/CaSGC
Center for Innovation in Space Instrumentation (CISI)
UCLA,
as a leader in the fields of space sciences and engineering,
as well as public education and outreach, is expanding its
research, education, and workforce training activities within
the Center for Innovation in Space Instrumentation (CISI)
The CISI
develops innovative instrumentation for cutting-edge space
missions. This CISI is the focal point for partnerships between
industry, government and the university and provides unique
opportunities for students to participate in the leading developments
in space exploration. Examples of such instruments include
a compact payload for a balloon mission in the Martian atmosphere,
miniature digital magnetometers for nanosatellites to be deployed
in a constellation in the Earth's magnetosphere, small energetic
particle sensors for heliospheric and space weather missions.
The
CISI also provides hands-on experience to students in both
technical and intellectual areas. It also provides a learning
environment to train a new cadre of Ph.D.s who will be the
leaders of our discipline and impart the thrill of our discoveries
and the basics of space science to an increasing number of
undergraduates. CISI has an active outreach program designed
to disseminate the most up-to-date discoveries in aerospace
science and engineering to the general public and to inspire
an ever-increasing number of K-12 students to enter the field
of science and technology.
