In 2001, the most recent year
that complete data are available, the NSGC&FP served close to 2000 citizens
by providing $5.5 million in tuition assistance at colleges and universities
across the nation. Among these were significant numbers of students from
underrepresented groups in science and engineering, including women,
African-Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Pacific Islanders, and
persons with disabilities. There is no matching funds requirement for program
funds distributed for fellowships and scholarships; however, the consortia have
supplemented these funds with nearly $3.5 million. The average Space Grant
student award was almost $4,000.
