Fellowships and Scholarships

Fellowships and scholarships are awarded by the Space Grant consortia. Please direct requests for information and applications to your local Space Grant office.

Space Grant supports both graduate and undergraduate students through a network of 52 university-based consortia in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In 2001, the network involved 820 affiliates, including 530 academic institutions. Each consortium receives fellowship and scholarship funds* from NASA. Most consortia supplement their NASA contributions with state or university funds. The consortia then distribute those funds competitively to student applicants from their member institutions.

In 2001, Space Grant awarded over 2300 tuition assistance awards averaging about $4,000.  Undergraduate awards averaged $2,000 and graduate fellowships over $10,000.  Approximately 20% of these students were from underrepresented groups in science and engineering, including African Americas, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, Pacific Islanders, and persons with disabilities.  Approximately 40% of the awards were to women.  Awards are competed at the state level and each consortium has a different set of criteria for selection.

Most Space Grant awards include a mentored research experience with university faculty or NASA personnel. Summer internships and academic year internships are often available. An awardee's field of study varies widely among consortia. Subjects of study range from precollege science teaching to intricate graduate level engineering design projects, such as that required to design and build a small satellite that will launch and collect real data. Many of the Space Grant research projects involve collaboration among other students, faculty, and NASA scientists or engineers. Space Grant encourages all consortia to ensure that awardees participate in research, especially undergraduates.

For a complete list of which institutions by state are members of the Space Grant network, consult the Space Grant Contact Database on our homepage or from our Space Grant national map, click on the state of interest to visit their web site. Interested applicants should inquire at the state level, as awardees must be enrolled at the institution that will disburse the funds.

*In Space Grant terminology, the word fellowship implies a graduate student award, and the word scholarship implies an undergraduate student award.
